Onehunga West Line Guide — One Less Car Auckland

🚆 Onehunga West Line trains start running from Sunday September 13 once the City Rail Link opens.

The Onehunga West Line is one of three lines on Auckland's rail network. At peak times it runs from Onehunga through Te Papapa, then along the Inner South corridor through Penrose, Ellerslie, Greenlane and Remuera to Newmarket, then into the City Fringe stations at Grafton and Maungawhau. Services run every 30 minutes all day, 7 days a week. At off-peak times (9am to 3pm, after 7pm) and weekends trains continue to Henderson, stopping at all East West Line stations. See the full online timetable. The best transfer to Waitematā, Te Waihorotiu and Karanga-a-Hape is to transfer to the South City Line at Newmarket.

🚉 Onehunga
Onehunga	Onehunga is one of Auckland's oldest and most historically significant town centres — a working-class suburb that grew up around the Manukau Harbour, and which has seen genuine renewal in recent years. The town centre on Onehunga Mall has a good mix of cafes, bars and restaurants, with Dress Smart outlet shopping a short walk from the station. The waterfront of the Manukau Harbour is accessible via Taumanu Reserve and the Manukau Foreshore Walkway, a surprisingly peaceful coastal escape.
Te Papapa	Te Papapa is a quiet local station serving the eastern residential suburbs of Onehunga and the surrounding Onehunga industrial area. It's a modest station in its own right, but punches above its weight as a destination — home to the much-loved Honey Springs café and the Springs Tavern, the acclaimed Epic Beer brewery taproom, and Waikaraka Park with its speedway, football club and the unusual Hochstetter Pond volcanic feature.
🚉 Inner South — Penrose to Newmarket
Penrose	Penrose is a major employment and industrial hub in south-central Auckland — home to significant corporate offices including Fletcher Building, Te Whatu Ora Digital and Fisher & Paykel Appliances, all within easy walking distance of the station. It is also the gateway station for Mount Smart Stadium (Go Media Stadium), Auckland's largest outdoor concert and sporting venue, just 15–20 minutes on foot and home to the Warriors NRL team and Auckland FC. The train is by far the easiest way to reach the stadium on event days, avoiding road congestion and the difficult parking situation nearby. Also served by the South City Line.
Ellerslie	Ellerslie is one of Auckland's most underrated South City Line stations — the train drops you directly into a thriving village centre on Main Highway, with an excellent selection of cafes, restaurants and bars all within a few minutes' walk. Between the station and Great South Road lies a significant concentration of corporate office parks, making Ellerslie one of the most practical train commutes in Auckland's south. Also served by the South City Line.
Greenlane	Greenlane is a quiet but well-connected station on the South City Line, sitting at the intersection of Great South Road and Greenlane Road. The surrounding area punches well above its weight — Kākāriki Hospital and the large Allevia Hospital Ascot precinct (including White Cross Ascot urgent care) are a short walk away, along with the Ascot Office Park medical complex and the Ellerslie Racecourse. Cornwall Park and Maungakiekie / One Tree Hill are reachable by bus. The Allevia Hospital and Ellerslie Racecourse are accessed by turning right out of the station, crossing the underpass and motorway. Also served by the South City Line.
Remuera	Remuera is one of Auckland's most attractive South City Line stations — a beautifully restored heritage building at the intersection of Market Road and Great South Road. The immediate surrounds are modest but rewarding: a cluster of excellent independent cafes are within a couple of minutes' walk, along with a 24-hour gym. Also served by the South City Line.
Newmarket	Newmarket is Auckland's second busiest train station and one of its best shopping and dining destinations. The station sits at the foot of Broadway, directly beside Westfield 277 — a sprawling two-site mall connected by sky bridges, with luxury brands, a rooftop bar strip and free weekday parking. A short walk south reveals Newmarket's best-kept secret: Nuffield, Teed, Osbourne and Khyber Pass Road, lined with outstanding independent cafes, restaurants and bars that attract a local crowd rather than a tourist one. Also served by the South City Line.
🏙 City Centre
Grafton	Grafton is one of Auckland's most functionally important train stations — a short 6-minute ride from the city, yet adjacent to Auckland's largest hospital, two university campuses, the Auckland Domain and two of the city's most prestigious schools. The station is used heavily by hospital staff, students, and visitors to the Domain. The southern entrance on Khyber Pass Road places commuters directly across from Les Mills and the University of Auckland's Newmarket campus. Also served by the South City Line.
Maungawhau	Maungawhau Station will serve the Uptown precinct — a dense, walkable neighbourhood spanning Eden Terrace, Mt Eden and Newton. The station sits at the northern edge of Normanby Road, one of Auckland's best dining and drinking streets, with the Auckland Beer Mile running through the precinct. Several excellent cafes, Vietnamese and Thai cuisine, fine dining, Korean BBQ, specialty wine bars and gastropubs are all within a 5-minute walk. The iconic Maungawhau / Mt Eden volcano is about 15 minutes on foot. Also served by the East West Line.

🚉 Off-peak and weekends: At off-peak times and on weekends, the line travels along the East West Line stations from Kingsland through to Henderson, stopping at all intermediate stations.
