⚠️ Station not yet open. Maungawhau Station is due to open in 2026 as part of the City Rail Link. The main entrance will be on Ruru Street, accessible from Mt Eden Road or New North Road. This guide covers the surrounding neighbourhood so you know what to expect when it opens.
Maungawhau Station will serve the Uptown precinct — a dense, walkable neighbourhood spanning Eden Terrace, Mt Eden and Newton. The station sits at the northern edge of Normanby Road, one of Auckland's best dining and drinking streets, with the Auckland Beer Mile running through the precinct. Several excellent cafes, Vietnamese and Thai cuisine, fine dining, Korean BBQ, specialty wine bars and gastropubs are all within a 5-minute walk. The iconic Maungawhau / Mt Eden volcano is about 15 minutes on foot.
Bars & The Beer Mile
Maungawhau Station sits at the southern end of the Auckland Beer Mile — a 3.2km craft beer crawl stretching from here to Morningside station. Five venues are within easy walking distance.
🍺 The Auckland Beer Mile was designed with public transport in mind — Maungawhau Station at one end, Morningside Station at the other, with a bus running the full length. Walk it, or hop on the train between the two stations.
Galbraith's Alehouse
An Auckland institution at 2 Mt Eden Road — one of the city's original microbreweries, celebrating 25+ years of brewing British-style hand-pulled real ales on site. Warm traditional pub atmosphere with open fires in winter, a beautiful hidden beer garden with BBQ, and excellent food including a legendary Sunday roast (bookings required).

Maungawhau / Mt Eden
Auckland's highest volcanic cone at 196 metres — the finest 360° panoramic views in the city, taking in the CBD, both harbours, Rangitoto and 13 other tūpuna maunga. A sacred ancestral mountain of deep significance to mana whenua, co-governed by the Tūpuna Maunga Authority. A short but steep walk leads to the summit (about 20 minutes return). Vehicle access to the summit is no longer permitted. Dogs on leads welcome. Free, open daily 7am–8:30pm.
