Onehunga is one of Auckland's oldest and most historically significant town centres — a working-class suburb that grew up around the Manukau Harbour, and which has seen genuine renewal in recent years. The town centre on Onehunga Mall has a good mix of cafes, bars and restaurants, with Dress Smart outlet shopping a short walk from the station. The waterfront of the Manukau Harbour is accessible via Taumanu Reserve and the Manukau Foreshore Walkway, a surprisingly peaceful coastal escape.
From late 2026, Onehunga becomes part of the City Rail Link Onehunga West Line — which will run every 30 minutes to Maungawhau at peak times, and at off-peak times and on weekends run through to Henderson, stopping at all East West Line stations. To access Waitematā, Te Waihorotiu or Karanga-a-Hape, change to a South City Line train at Newmarket.

"The coffee is seriously good — rich, aromatic, and consistently smooth every time." A specialty coffee roasting bar where you can smell the fresh-roasted beans from the street. The dirty matcha latte is a standout — matcha layered with espresso, surprisingly addictive. Also serves a mango matcha in summer, brownie cookies and toasties. "My favourite cafe in Onehunga." A cosy, relaxing addition to the Onehunga community, tucked into the ground floor of the Manaaki apartment development. The smashed burger is a standout, alongside great coffee and matcha. "Presentation is 10/10" and the space is well suited to catching up with friends over a coffee. "I don't even remember having croissants as delicious as these in France — so fresh, light, buttery and fluffy." An authentic French patisserie with a large window into the kitchen so you can watch pastries being made on the spot. "What a place — wine, craft beer, yum food. If you're into cocktails, you're in heaven. Every cocktail is a unique creation." A cosy neighbourhood bar with a lovely garden area with heaters, happy hour until 7pm ($10 tap beer), a massive chips portion and a barista described by regulars as "a magician and true artist." The Manukau Harbour foreshore is a short walk west from the station — a peaceful coastal escape from the town centre.
"A nice coastal park and walkway, part of which is on reclaimed land — plenty of picnic spots, a couple of safe swimming beaches for the kids and a boarded walkway beneath the cliffs with nice views of the Manukau Harbour." A large, well-designed reserve with cycleways and walkways along the shoreline, safe sheltered swimming at high tide, public toilets and plenty of open space. "Cleverly designed so the motorway is out of sight and very little sound carries." Walk west along Princes Street from the station, then cross the footbridge over the motorway — approximately 12 minutes from the platform. Open 6am–9pm (to 7:30pm Sundays).

A coastal walking and cycling path along the Manukau Harbour foreshore, lined with pōhutukawa trees that are spectacular in summer bloom. The walkway runs from Onehunga Harbour Road towards Hugo Johnston Drive in Penrose — a good long walk with harbour views throughout. "Beautiful views — lots of pōhutukawa trees, probably awesome when they start blooming into summer." Good for walking and cycling.

A stunning $38 million walking and cycling bridge over the Manukau Harbour, opened in August 2022 — named by mana whenua to mean "the gentle lazy winds." The bridge features beautifully carved Māori motifs, puhoro fascia panels, balustrade colours reflecting the kahawai fish, and bilingual signage sharing the cultural stories of Te Ahiwaru and Ngāti Whātua. "People are blown away by the quality of this infrastructure." Access from the Onehunga side via the south end of Onehunga Mall or Onehunga Harbour Road. The bridge connects to the Southwestern shared path along SH20 — offering off-road cycling to Mount Roskill, Avondale, Pt Chevalier and onward to the city centre. Also links to Māngere Town Centre and the cycling route to Auckland Airport. Fishing is permitted on the bridge. Free, open 24 hours.
