Meadowbank is one of Auckland's most pleasant train stations for walkers and cyclists — the Te Ara Ki Uta Ki Tai shared path runs directly alongside the station, connecting Glen Innes to Tamaki Drive through native bush and past the Orakei Basin. The station has a well-loved local café a short walk away, and access to two of East Auckland's best green spaces.
Cafe
One excellent independent café within easy walking distance of the station.
Daily Brew
A hidden gem on Meadowbank Road — "small but mighty," doing the right things well. Regulars rave about the avo on toast ("the best in town — rustic and packs so much flavour"), the chocolate banana bread and excellent coffee. Friendly, genuine staff who remember your name. Great gluten-free options. A welcoming morning oasis before or after the walkway. Open 7 days from 7am (8am weekends).

Three outstanding green spaces accessible directly from or near the station — the Orakei Basin loop, a cross-city shared path and a pocket of native bush.
Ōrākei Basin
A peaceful and scenic loop walk around the Orakei Basin tidal lagoon — accessible from both Meadowbank and Ōrākei train stations. The well-maintained path is safe for bikes, scooters and dogs (large off-leash area), and takes about an hour at a leisurely pace. Highlights include the Orakei Creek footbridge and beautiful water views back to the city skyline. Note there are steep stairs at both ends near the Sailing Club — those with prams may want to plan accordingly.

Te Ara Ki Uta Ki Tai
One of Auckland's finest shared paths — a dedicated walking and cycling route running from Glen Innes Station to Tamaki Drive, passing directly through Meadowbank. The path winds through native bush, past the Orakei Basin, a historic cemetery and farmland, with only one road crossing the entire length. Scenery ranges from creek to coastal to forested gully. Accessible to prams and all fitness levels, though some moderate slopes for cyclists. Kepa Bush Reserve is accessible directly from the path.

Kepa Bush Reserve
A hidden pocket of native bush accessible directly from the Te Ara Ki Uta Ki Tai shared path. Once below the canopy, traffic noise disappears entirely and birdsong takes over — tree ferns, lookout points and forested gullies make it hard to believe you're in a city of almost two million people. Some slippery slopes after rain; sturdy footwear recommended. Several lookout points with city views. Free, open daily.
