Started as pop-ups during Covid by a motorcycle mechanic turned burger obsessive, Baby G Burger now has a permanent 15-seater spot on Great North Road. "Undoubtedly serving the best smash burgers in NZ" — the signature Oklahoma Dreaming burger (two smashed patties, mustard mayo, hot sauce, maple syrup, pickles) draws queues out the door. Small space, so expect a wait at peak times.

Tokos Tacos
One of Auckland's most celebrated taco spots — a Tongan-owned family business run by a father and son who spent 15 years in Arizona soaking up Mexican food culture. The birria tacos (slow-cooked beef and pork with a rich consommé for dipping) and fresh fish tacos with imported Mexican chillies are routinely called the best in Auckland. One of Auckland's most beloved weekly markets, held at the Avondale Racecourse every Sunday. Fresh fruit and vegetables, fish, eggs, honey, live plants, Asian dry goods, second-hand tools, clothing and curiosities — all at great prices. Tongan banana pancakes and raw fish from Toby's are family favourites. Arrives open from 5am; best selection before 9am, best bargains near noon. $3 parking on site. The train is the best way to get here — skip the parking chaos.

"Felt like I went back in time going to this beautiful theatre." One of Auckland's last surviving heritage single-screen cinemas — a stunning 1920s building that has barely changed in decades, now reborn as a beloved community venue. Regular film screenings use real film, and the cinema also hosts occasional concerts, jazz nights, live performance and community events.
