A peaceful native bush walk following the Ōteha Stream — a great escape from the busy commercial centre.
A genuine hidden gem, just minutes from the bus station — a walkway leading through parkland and native bush to the unofficially-named Lucas Creek Waterfall in Gills Scenic Reserve. The walk starts on Ōteha Valley Road: walk through the park and ride, follow the covered walkway, then cross Ōteha Valley Road at the off-ramp lights. At Mills Lane, cross the river to access the gravel path, or stay on the concrete path for a better surface. The walk is approximately 1.5km and takes around 20–30 minutes each way, finishing with a short, well-marked trail down to the falls themselves. "Truly spectacular after rain — this waterfall doesn't receive the attention it deserves." The waterfall marks the upper tidal reaches of Lucas Creek, with a viewing platform and bench nearby. Wear comfortable shoes, as the final section can be uneven and a little slippery after wet weather.
