Why this site?
Driving in Auckland is often said to be the worst part about living in this city. It's stressful, unreliable, the streets are confusing, and the cost adds up. So it's no surprise that many Aucklanders are interested in driving less — but it can be hard to know where to start. Those of us who don't drive every day have figured out how to get around the city: understanding the buses and trains, finding the hidden bike paths and shortcuts, and learning all the great spots that are easy and fun to reach without a car. But it can take a long time to discover it all — you often have to change your mental map of the city.
So One Less Car Auckland is designed to make it much easier to find all this hidden information, and to help people start making more journeys without a car — and maybe, eventually, having one less car in their household, or even going car-free altogether.
I'm starting with this website, but this is hopefully just the beginning. I'd like to build a community of people sharing stories and encouraging others. But let's see how this goes.
Can I do this in my city?
Yes! If you want to build something similar for your city, please get in touch. I'd be happy to help you — new technology makes it faster and easier than ever to build pages like this to share information. But I've learnt a lot about what works and what doesn't, so I'd be happy to share my experiences.
My business is missing / I've found an error
Please get in touch. I've built the list of businesses based on my knowledge of the city and by checking through Google Maps, but I will have missed many useful businesses. I'll do my best to add yours, or fix any errors or out-of-date information.
About One Less Car Auckland
Currently this is a personal project, though I'm open to growing it into something more formal over time if there's interest. One Less Car is always intended to be not-for-profit — I do not expect to take advertising or sponsorship. The only costs have been my personal AI subscription (which I use for various projects), and $40 a year to reserve the domain name.

But with AI, I've built a much larger site than I ever imagined, in only a couple of months and just a few hours a week in the evenings over that time.
